Welcome to NAION Life!
“NAION” (Pronounced NAYON) is the acronym for Non-arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy. A NAION “event” is the blockage of blood to the optic nerve resulting in sudden and painless loss of vision in one eye.
It is an alarming, very scary, traumatic, lifechanging event that triggers a multitude of emotions, and requires numerous adjustments in daily living. The early days, weeks and months are a jolt to the system that requires a great deal of acceptance, patience and perseverance. The good news is, WE LEARN TO ADAPT. Neuroplasticity is the real deal, and amazing progress is made in the first 9-12 months.
It is important to realize, and remind ourselves, that there are countless people who live happy, healthy and productive lives with all levels of vision loss. One eye down, as is the case with most of those affected by NAION, still leaves total vision at 70% or better. It has been reported that after the adaptation period people sometimes forget they have any loss of vision.
There are many sites that deal with the hows and whys from a medical standpoint but few that deal with the aftermath realities of sudden vision loss.
The intention of this site is to address the psychological and emotional trauma following partial or complete vision loss whether gradual or sudden, one eye or both. The aim is to offer peer support in the form of testimonials, links to resources, and suggest practical guides to navigating the future with various levels vision.
Regarding Accessibility: Accessibility is a complicated and complex matter that will take some time to implement. The starting point will be to minimize extraneous visuals such as graphics and fancy fonts and emphasize readability using high contrast, basic, consistant fonts, and breaking things up into organized, easy to locate information using titled “buttons” and “accordion” style modules.
This site is a work in progress. Please return for more insights and information.

*In the spirit of transparency, please note that Claude AI was used to aid in structure and some content. Every effort has been made to check for accuracy. Without the aid of AI this site would have taken many months or longer to create.
In that the author felt an urgency to get a site up to address an area that is devoid of information about vision loss as it pertains to emotional, psychological and practical considerations, as well as the physical or pathological perspective, it was determined that AI provides a phenominal tool to express these issues and therefore justified it’s use. The difference between information derived from AI and that of the author will no doubt be evident in grammar, punctuation, spelling and run-on sentences.
