ABOUT NAION

NAION (Non-arthritic, Anterior Ischemic Otical Neuropathy) is a condition that effects the optic nerve, causing sudden vision loss in one eye. It is the most common acute optic neuropathy in adults over 50.

There are two parts to a NAION event, the initial part where blood supply to the optic nerve is cutoff because of either a clot (eye stroke) or inflammation. This first event causes damage to the optic nerves that connect with the brain. The second part is neurological as communication between the nerves and the brain is compromised. The damage may not be complete death of nerves however whatever damage is done is irreversible. The second stage involves the brain and its capacity to recalibrate the remaining nerve function by way of neuroplasticity. This recalibration is most efficient after swelling has subsided. Swelling decreases naturally or with the aid of oral steroids such as Prednisone as prescribed be a doctor.
